About this artwork
Standing inside the Amsterdamse Bos, I found myself pulled deeper into the forest until the world outside simply ceased to exist. What stopped me was the quality of light – that filtered, underwater green you only find in old-growth woodland, the way it pools on mossy rocks and turns everything to teal and shadow. Working in oils, I built up the dense layering of foliage across the canvas, letting one shade of green dissolve into the next – emerald…
into jade into the deep dark of the understorey. The fallen trunks and boulders in the foreground anchor you in the scene while the branches overhead form a living vault, drawing the eye upward and inward.
There's a stillness inside a forest like this that you can't quite find anywhere else – a reminder that some places exist entirely on their own terms, indifferent to us, and that to enter them is a kind of privilege.
