About this artwork
I recently returned from three weeks exploring China over their New Year / Spring Festival Season. This work was my emotional response to walking at night through one of their many lantern festivals, and I was delighted with AI described it as "Joy passing through Memory."
Technically, the work is derived through many types of digital interaction. First, digital pictures are uploaded to ChatGPT ( the AI system I consider my collaborator), and… I interrogate the system for how it would describe the overarching structures and tone. When I feel like I have developed a language on which the machine and I agree, then I simplify it to a basic set of instructions, upload a final set of pictures for the metadata, and the first image is generated. From there, adjustments are made, and more images are generated until I have a set of layers to work with. These are manually collaged, resulting in the final 'digital painting.'
