About this artwork
This collage was built from images taken during my recent trip to China. I wanted to portray a spiralling vortex centred on a luminous ball, in my mind merging East Asian calligraphy with the figurative sculptures I saw in the town where porcelain was manufactured in the past. I use layered textures and concentric motion to suggest the passage of time and the partially revealed figures and script to seal the cultural narrative. I hoped for a meditative…
presence.
As a viewer said, "This one makes me smile. At first glance it gives a feeling of desert and antiquity - almost more like Egypt than China - the soft waves remind me of blowing sand, and it has a lovely dreamlike mysticism. When you look closer, the humour of the actual characters immediately strikes you! Then, the sense of dust, age and decay returns, and it makes it a little eerie and poignant. The charm remains though. It's an interesting duality - very fitting for Chinese culture."

For more than fifty-five years, my work has explored how art can express aspects of human experience that are often difficult to put into words. Classically trained in Fine Art at the University of Colorado, I later completed a doctorate in Educational Leadership at Columbia University, developing a parallel career as an academic, researcher, and author while continuing my artistic practice.
Throughout my academic career, I taught graduate students, wrote books on qualitative research, and spent more than a decade developing innovative online learning environments. Rather than moving away from art, these experiences deepened my fascination with memory, perception, identity, and the stories people carry through life—questions that continue to shape my work today.
Now working full-time as a visual artist, I create layered digital artworks that combine photography, digital collage, and generative AI as creative partners in the exploration of people, places, and states of awareness.
