About this artwork
I was a gardener long before I became an artist. For years I have explored ways to express this passion in an abstract visual language that pleased me. This summer (2024), and especially in this work, I feel I've got closer to accomplishing this feat.
This is a loose, multi-layered work in oils. Fine and bold mark making and colour graduation give the sense of a calm space in a large garden or park. Complexity and energy are balanced with quiet… serenity. The piece conveys that sense of well-being and harmony that sitting in a beautiful garden brings. Parts of the work are glossy and textured.
This artwork is framed in a classic contemporary pale natural wood shadow frame. It is signed on the back and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
« My works are reduced inner landscapes that invite the viewer to interpret the mood or atmosphere, whether calm, meditative, melancholy, playful, or joyous. »
Alethea Eriksson is a South African–Swiss artist based in Baden, Switzerland. Her lyrical expressionist paintings have been presented in both solo and group exhibitions across Switzerland, as well as at art fairs in Britain and Germany.
She describes her abstract landscapes—what she calls “soulscapes”—as a form of visual poetry, expressing the sense of renewal and wellbeing she experiences in nature. Her work explores the mood and energy of landscapes, skies, the sea, and her own garden, while also engaging deeply with color, line, and form.
Inspired by masters such as Monet and Cézanne, alongside Abstract Expressionists like Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly, Eriksson creates compositions that invite the viewer to feel moved, uplifted, and immersed in a contemplative emotional space.
Alethea Eriksson is a member of the Swiss Association of Women Artists.
