About this artwork
In Last Judgement II we are offered God's perspective of us. Sure, the depiction of the creator of the world as a stern judge, who’s prepared unimaginable torments for us after our death - is terrifying.
But what of our own image? What would we look like at the end of our earthly travels?
In this painting, all of hell’s creatures have vanished. Seemingly, they only ever existed within the human mind and its folklore. All that remains is a calm… and deliberate presence before transcendence. While some souls are clearly more tainted than others.
Above them are the words from Saint Anselm, as Chaucer quotes them in the last section of the Canterbury Tales.
The letters flutter and levitate overhead. Speaking of justice, and divine intervention. Not as a curse, but rather as a prophecy which is about to unfold.
Alex Bras, a trained architect turned artist, masterfully employs mediums like used cardboard, acrylic, oil on canvas, and watercolor paper. With surrealistic and figurative techniques in her series, she explores complex human experiences, keying into the subtleties of emotions and mental states. Her emotionally-charged paintings, often featuring sea creatures and human figures, serve as a visual metaphor for the burdensome universality of the human experience, fluctuating between melancholy and hope.
