About this artwork
This is the only picture in the series where the fish is not alive. The monk is too lost in thought process to notice it. Like everything else, our ideological and religious systems must develop along with the rest of the world. Otherwise, we may get stuck in dogma, missing the very living essence of the teachings.
Despite the complex message, actual visual inspiration is very dear to me. The basis was a photo of a magnificent Uzbek ceramic artist,… whose studio I was lucky to visit in 2019. Every artist, every great master devotes himself to art almost religiously, almost like a monk.
Acrylic on used cardboard, black metal frame with black cardboard passepartout and Artglass AR 70
Work size 40x50 cm
Frame size 50,5x60,5 cm

Credentials
- Works on commission
Alex Bras, a trained architect turned artist, masterfully employs mediums like used cardboard, acrylic, oil on canvas, and watercolor paper. With surrealistic and figurative techniques in her series, she explores complex human experiences, keying into the subtleties of emotions and mental states. Her emotionally-charged paintings, often featuring sea creatures and human figures, serve as a visual metaphor for the burdensome universality of the human experience, fluctuating between melancholy and hope.
