About this artwork
Genesis 2:7, bottom text written in Latin:
Then, God formed man from dust and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.
The work symbolizes the origin of evil; and the birth of humanity.
Here, the religious icon lying on the floor depicts the Creation of Adam while he covers his ears after the
blast of his formation. In the mushroom cloud, Father God looks at Epicures. The Greek thinker
confronts him with the paradox:
“If God is willing to… prevent evil, but unable?” Then He is not omnipotent. If God is able, but not
willing? Then He is malevolent. If God is both willling and able to prevent it, where does evil come from?”
On the opposite side, Darwin stares at the Mitochondrial Eve, shouldered by Mother God. Now but a
footnote in history, after the Abrahamic religions scrapped her from these scriptures. The Mitochondrial
Eve is the mother of all Homo sapiens, the only female line that still has descendants until this day.
Alex Bras, a trained architect turned artist, masterfully employs mediums like used cardboard, acrylic, oil on canvas, and watercolor paper. With surrealistic and figurative techniques in her series, she explores complex human experiences, keying into the subtleties of emotions and mental states. Her emotionally-charged paintings, often featuring sea creatures and human figures, serve as a visual metaphor for the burdensome universality of the human experience, fluctuating between melancholy and hope.
