About this artwork
A discarded record becomes a picture carrier – and at the same time a part of history.
When our telephones still had cords, they tied us to one place. We couldn't be everywhere at once, making calls and doing everything else at the same time. When we picked up the receiver, we were present – more in the moment, more engaged in the conversation, more present with the other person.
The cord limited our freedom of movement and at the same time gave… us something that is often lost today: undivided attention.
The vinyl record tells of a similar time. It too demanded attention: put it on, turn it over, listen. No endless skipping, no playing it in the background.
WHAT? connects these two analog memories and poses a simple question:
Are we really more connected today – just because we are constantly reachable?
