About this artwork
This work is part of the Anatomy of Home collection, where familiar symbols are explored as quiet structures of belonging, memory, and resilience.
The marigold appears in its pure presence, isolated against a white field. Its layered petals unfold like a living archive, holding warmth, protection, and continuity.
In Ukrainian culture, the marigold symbolizes home, care, and rooted memory. It carries the scent of childhood, the stillness of gardens,… and an invisible thread connecting generations. The flower stands as powerful emblem of inner shelter, reminding us that home is not always a place, but a state we carry within.
The brown shadows are created with watercolor made from natural garnet stone, a material associated with protection, strength, and endurance.
Created with watercolors on 100% cotton cold-pressed paper, the surface allows the pigments to breathe. White space invites contemplation, giving the flower room to exist fully and without noise.
Alisa Vovk is a Kyiv-based Ukrainian artist who primarily works with watercolor, expanding into oils, acrylics, mixed media, video, and storytelling. She blends botanical realism with impressionistic softness, using delicate layering, granulation, and fluid washes to explore the transparency and depth of the natural world. Her art reveals gentle tensions between clarity and atmosphere, encouraging viewers to notice beauty in the present moment. Her works evoke calm, nostalgia, and a poetic sense of longing—inviting reflection on fragile memories, emotional depth, and the quiet wonder found in simple things.
