About this artwork
This watercolor work is part of the Anatomy of Home series, where familiar flowers become quiet symbols of belonging, memory, and resilience.
The marigold is a deeply rooted image in Ukrainian culture, often growing close to houses, along paths, and in family gardens. It carries the warmth of everyday life, protection, and continuity. Painted in layered washes of ochre, amber, and earthy browns, the flower unfolds slowly on white paper, revealing… its inner structure and calm strength. The central core is created with watercolor pigment made from natural garnet stone, adding depth, weight, and a subtle mineral presence to the composition.
Here, the marigold is isolated from landscape and time. Removed from its usual setting, it becomes a symbol of home, not as a place, but as a feeling. Stable, lived-in, and enduring. Through watercolor, water, and patience, the work reflects the idea of home as something fragile yet persistent, held together by memory, care, and quiet presence.
Alisa Vovk is a Kyiv-based Ukrainian artist who primarily works with watercolor, expanding into oils, acrylics, mixed media, video, and storytelling. She blends botanical realism with impressionistic softness, using delicate layering, granulation, and fluid washes to explore the transparency and depth of the natural world. Her art reveals gentle tensions between clarity and atmosphere, encouraging viewers to notice beauty in the present moment. Her works evoke calm, nostalgia, and a poetic sense of longing—inviting reflection on fragile memories, emotional depth, and the quiet wonder found in simple things.
