About this artwork
A single red poppy rises above a burned collage of a destroyed building from the city where I was born. The newspaper headline is covered with ash. It feels like two worlds were split apart.
The poppy is painted in watercolor with botanical precision. It carries the meanings we grew up with. Fertility, beauty, youth, memory, and an old promise of protection. In Ukraine poppies are symbols of remembrance and the quiet words "never again". Yet this… happened again, in my own hometown.
I placed the most fragile flower above the ruins. Its thin petals usually tremble under the warm May sun. I want poppies to return to their peaceful fields. I want the evil to settle as dust and be forgotten.
"Anatomy of Home" collection.
Alisa Vovk is a Kyiv-based Ukrainian artist who primarily works with watercolor, expanding into oils, acrylics, mixed media, video, and storytelling. She blends botanical realism with impressionistic softness, using delicate layering, granulation, and fluid washes to explore the transparency and depth of the natural world. Her art reveals gentle tensions between clarity and atmosphere, encouraging viewers to notice beauty in the present moment. Her works evoke calm, nostalgia, and a poetic sense of longing—inviting reflection on fragile memories, emotional depth, and the quiet wonder found in simple things.
