About this artwork
“Celebrating Our Victories?” combines historical monuments with a critical examination of the concept of victory. The impetus was a political statement from 2025 that prompted the artist to reflect on the ambivalence of such celebratory gestures. In the work, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, the Brandenburg Gate, Trajan's Column, the Washington Monument, and the Arc de Triomphe appear as glowing red silhouettes, embedded in overgrown nature.… The architecture appears monumental and fragile at the same time—an interpretive reflection on how history is layered and reinterpreted. The painting was created using an outdoor technique: sun, humidity, and wind interact with the layers of paint, producing cracks, relief structures, and unpredictable variations, while Garbe simultaneously maintains a precise color logic. The work is part of the exhibition “From Shadow to Light.”
« Art that fascinates me is often like a symbiosis of philosophical magic and good craft. »
Andreas Garbe is an artist based in Germany whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Switzerland. Working abstractly with figurative and representational influences, his diverse compositions are both atmospheric and philosophical. In addition, Garbe explores themes relating to social issues, literature, meditation, and sensory perception. His landscapes, figurative pieces and abstractions are created using acrylics, oils, and resin on canvas.
