In the sculpture Aftertaste — or Eve — a moment is captured just after the bite of the forbidden fruit. The taste still lingers on the lips, while awareness has already become inevitable. It is an allegory of the moment when knowledge becomes a burden and awakening marks the loss of innocence. What we see is not merely the biblical Eve, but humanity itself after touching knowledge.
An aftertaste may be sweet or bitter; it can unite pleasure and pain.… It is the state of “after” — after tasting, after love, after the loss of illusions. After the moment when the world can no longer be seen as it once was.
Eve here is not a symbol of sin, but a symbol of transition. From this moment onward, human experience acquires responsibility, shame, discernment, and the ability to give birth.
This sculpture is a body after experience, after love. A body in which knowledge has become flesh.
Anna Kormilitsina is a sculptor of Russian origin who works primarily with wood, but also with stone, leather, and unusual materials such as insects, bone, and fur. She uses carving, sanding, assembly, and varnishing techniques to create works that are both lyrical and epic, blending grotesque surrealism with symbolic metamorphosis. Her singular and unsettling art expresses the full intensity of inner life, oscillating between the wondrous and the unsettling.
