In the symbolism of playing cards, the jack is an intermediate figure. He is neither king nor ace, yet he is often the most agile, the most cunning, the most unpredictable. In the suit of spades — the suit of fate, anxiety, and dark energy — the jack becomes the image of a player who believes he controls the course of the game.
But does he?
The three women playing cards are not specific characters. They are forces: desire, intuition, passion; memory,… fear, power. They pursue their game calmly, intently, almost indifferently. The male head beneath them is neither victim nor hero. He is the playing field.
This sculpture speaks of the idea that life itself is a game in which roles are constantly shifting. We believe that we are the ones playing — choosing, calculating, planning our moves. Yet at some point we discover that it is we who are being played. That our decisions are merely cards already dealt by someone else.
Anna Kormilitsina is a sculptor of Russian origin who works primarily with wood, but also with stone, leather, and unusual materials such as insects, bone, and fur. She uses carving, sanding, assembly, and varnishing techniques to create works that are both lyrical and epic, blending grotesque surrealism with symbolic metamorphosis. Her singular and unsettling art expresses the full intensity of inner life, oscillating between the wondrous and the unsettling.
