This figure balances on the edge between play and menace, between grotesque fantasy and ancient myth. It seems to manipulate invisible strings, yet remains captive to its own instincts. The human and the monstrous are woven together so tightly that the boundary between them disappears. The sculpture speaks of a hidden hunger for possession, of desire's power over reason, and of the fragility of those who believe themselves to be in control. It is… an image of the inner cannibal that lives within us all.
Anna Kormilitsina is a sculptor of Russian origin who works primarily with wood, but also with stone, leather, and unusual materials such as insects, bone, and fur. She uses carving, sanding, assembly, and varnishing techniques to create works that are both lyrical and epic, blending grotesque surrealism with symbolic metamorphosis. Her singular and unsettling art expresses the full intensity of inner life, oscillating between the wondrous and the unsettling.
