About this artwork
I made this painting to compete for the Singulart Prize. I have translated the theme 'Deeply human' into a colorful collection of figures, characters and human beings, situated in the universe. When we realize that everything in the universe is made of stardust, we also know that we as humans, and as humans and nature, are inextricably linked. For me, that connection is ultimately 'deeply human'.
In this work I worked in a very layered manner to… achieve maximum depth and color strength. Many transparent layers, different colors on top of each other. For this linen I used an exuberant palette. I put some figures in very sketchily, others were worked out in detail. Some figures are very prominent, others almost blend into the background of the universe. This work is a mix of complexity and playfulness.
