About this artwork
I had read the book 'Synchronicity' by Carl Gustav Jung and I was captivated by the insights of this wise man. This canvas is an ode to the famous Swiss psychiatrist.
We see the Swiss Alps in the distance. A woman seems to float in surrender. Is this dreamland, images from the subconscious? Dendrites, the branched outgrowths of nerve cells (neurons), weave all over the canvas. These branches touch a sloop on the right side. The purple-green undulating… landscape looks like hills with forests, but they could also be waves. And as an image on the image, in neat order, we see nine gold-coloured scarabs.
Once a patient of Jung told him a dream in which a golden scarab appeared. At the same time, something tapped on the window of the room. Jung opened the window and a golden beetle flew in. It was a wonderful example for the explanation of a phenomenon Jung called 'synchronicity': a 'coincidental' coincidence of significant outer and inner events that cannot be explained causally.
