About this artwork
In this work, I've captured the raw power of a storm—the turbulent blue tones and the texture of sand and collage convey the energy and unpredictability of nature. This is reflected not only in the color selection (pigments of ultramarine, Van Dyck brown, and a vibrant turquoise). Against a light, heavily worked background, these are the main colors, but they are contrasted by an orange-red. The amount of color is rather small, but it leaves a lasting…

My aim was to create a work – like a thunderstorm – with a lot of power and energy, and that is how I applied the paints.

Annette G. Rathjen is a versatile artist with a background in photography, painting, and printmaking. She works with a mixture of painting, collage, and drawing, layering elements upon elements. She uses acrylic paints, charcoal, chalk, but also sand, coffee grounds, marble dust, ash, and sometimes old nautical charts.
