About this artwork
This piece was painted as a billboard and flyer image for a literary conference organized by Fort-de-France university in Martinique. The literary summit gathered writers from the Caribbean and Latin America, as a tribute to the Tout-Monde and the Boom art movements. The Tout-Monde was defined by Edouard Glissant as a mingling of colonial and indigenous cultures, in keeping with globalization. This mixed creative process is represented by the colorful… wig worn by the subject. Her African boubou outfit is interspersed with baby turtles, as a symbol of slow travels and slow migrations. Turtles never forget where they came from-their roots- and always go back to their native beach to lay their eggs. However, like everybody today -Tout-Monde- they carry with them all the places they have been too; they will forever carry the barnacles, algae, and scars collected on their shell.
« Colors and shapes flow like music out of my mind. They resonate with love, joy, peace, and self-acceptance. »
