About this artwork
This piece looks like it came straight from a vintage handbag that decided to become a pop artist. The silver pieces—originally intended to decorate elegant ladies' handbags in the 1960s—are reinvented here as small, almost futuristic, floating islands, where tiny human figures dwell as if in a parallel universe.
There's something delightfully playful about the composition: the metallic ovals resemble retro UFOs or space platforms, while the figures,… frozen in everyday gestures, contribute an almost absurd and charming narrative. It's as if the classic elegance of 1960s fashion has been blended with a surreal diorama brimming with humor.
António Azevedo uses model dolls inside small square frames, merging his training in fashion design with his experience in window dressing and merchandising. He employs a meticulous and detailed technique, recreating everyday scenes in miniature from common objects, imbuing each piece with a unique theatrical atmosphere. His works invite the viewer to imagine their own stories, conveying nostalgia, wonder, and a deep connection with everyday life.
