About this artwork
Starting from an aphorism by Friedrich Nietzsche, I created two canvases - The striving for distinction I - representing a detail of the "model-ascetic" protagonist who sacrifices herself in an industrial and classical landscape of the Italian 16th century.
…The striving for excellence brings with it, in regard to one's fellow man, - to name only a few steps on this long ladder - torture, then beatings, horror, terrified astonishment, then wonder,… envy, admiration, then exultation, joy; cheerfulness, then laughter, mockery, scorn, sarcasm, then a distribution of blows, an infliction of torture; here, at the end of the ladder, stands the ascetic and the martyr: he experiences the supreme joy in procuring for himself, as a consequence of his instinct for excellence, precisely what his opposite image, on the lowest rung of the ladder, the barbarian, makes another suffer, over whom and before whom he wants to excel…
Antonio Ortolani, trained at NABA in Milan, expresses himself through oil painting with symbolist and surrealist influences. He develops an intriguing contrast between industrial architectural realism and nature, adding ancient fabrics and beeswax for a unique texture. With strong reference to poetic and philosophical texts, his works evoke the emotions of an almost forgotten era, exploring the duality between humility and pride.
