The Sibyl is a character from Greek and Roman mythology. She is a prophetess, sometimes inspired by Apollo,1 capable of knowing the future.
The most important of all in Roman mythology was the Cuman Sibyl. In Greek mythology there was Herophile and before her the first Sibyl, daughter of Zeus:2
«There is a rock that rises above the earth. On it, the Delphians say, a woman called Herophilus, surnamed Sibyl, stood singing oracles. I have discovered… that the previous Sibyl was as ancient as any other, the one the Greeks say is the daughter of Zeus and Lamia, daughter of Poseidon, and that she was the first woman to sing oracles and was called Sibyl by the Libyans.»
The sibyls lived in caves or near streams of water.4 The prophecies were always expressed in a trance state and in Greek hexameters, which were transmitted in writing.
« I wanted to be a pilot, but I ended up painting. Now I fly higher. »
Arturo Prins is an exciting Spanish artist whose style comes from a sensibility of play, discipline, freedom and rebellion, redoubled in a constant reinvention of himself. Thematically, Prins looks to delve into metaphysics, symbolism, esoteric cosmogony, while mixing in humor to soften the transcendent themes in his work. He also describes his work as being "nostalgic for the future, sometimes with a nod to the eclectic spiritualism between East and West."
