In “Samsara Forest,” I created a four-panel work that unfolds as a symbolic landscape where birds, owls, and hidden eyes emerge from a tapestry of geometric embroidery and sumi ink. By interlacing organic forms with precise geometric structures, I wanted to suggest the inseparable connection between nature’s vitality and cosmic order.
At first glance, I placed familiar motifs—the owl, the spider’s web, the blossoming branches—yet refracted them through… patterns of circles, spirals, and lattices to transcend the everyday. For me, the forest is more than a habitat; it becomes a metaphor for samsara, the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
I used gold and silver threads that glimmer subtly within the softness of ink, like fragments of light caught between shadow and silence. Through this work, I hoped to invite contemplation: the forest is not static, but a living memory of the universe, holding within it both fragility and eternity.
Asami Goto(五島アサミ) is a contemporary artist working along two axes: Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting) and her original technique of Geometric Embroidery + Sumi Ink Art.
Her Nihonga works are informed by the spiritual and aesthetic sensibilities of classical Japanese art, particularly Buddhist visual culture, capturing invisible atmospheres and subtle presences. Her textile-based works use organic cotton, natural silk threads, sumi ink, and gold and silver leaf to merge geometric order with the organic rhythms of nature, visualizing relationships between natural structures and living systems.
Goto has exhibited in France, the United States, Spain, and Japan, and elsewhere internationally. In 2023, she received an Excellence Award at an exhibition held at the National Art Center, Tokyo.
