Veronica Franco was a famous Venetian courtesan (1546-1591). She was the mistress of Henry III, King of France. She was extremely cultured, brilliant, and a poet. In 1577, she was summoned before the Inquisition tribunal, accused of witchcraft. She was ultimately acquitted.
