In ‘Lake’ I subconsciously channeled my fascination with Claude Monet in oils and collage to create my version of a lake very much tethered to my loving memories of Prespes and my father’s hometown built near the beautiful lakes in the far north west corner of Greece.
The work is definitely an homage to my roots but in a dreamy introspective way that came intuitively and this is why it holds a certain vagueness and magic about it. In bigger picture… terms this painting is another fragment of my ongoing loving relationship with nature and it aims to reflect nature’s perfect conditions for contemplation and centering. That’s what I think will transfer to the space it dwells as well.
‘The dreamy quality I often chase in my practice is about accepting that a different world is possible, we only need to perceive it first. In this context I like to think of my artistry as a celebration and an act of resistance.'
Athina Pappa is an artist with a Diploma in Architecture from Democritus University of Thrace in Greece and a Master’s in Visual Communication (majored in illustration) from Birmingham City University in the UK. Her academic focus has constantly been the notion of metaphor and visual symbolism. She has painted since she was three years old and she has been doing it professionally since 2013.
Her style is a vibrant blend of dream-pop symbolism and feminine spirituality, employing expressive layers of acrylics, oil pastels and collage textures with influences from visionary art and art nouveau. She crafts works that evoke a sense of wonder, optimism and the urgency for harmony between humans and nature and the balancing of the male-female energy dipole.
