About this artwork
I met this Tibetan monk in front of the Buddha Stupa in Bodnath, a sacred site in Kathmandu, Nepal. The stupa is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. When I asked the monk if I could take his photo, he reacted in an unusual way. He came very close to me and looked deep into my eyes. This wordless encounter, so present and intense, made a deep impression on me—it was a genuine, unadulterated gaze.
Om a Hung is associated with Guru Rinpoche… Padmasambhava, who brought Buddhism to Tibet. Padmasambhava's cave is located near Kathmandu. Therefore, this image is dedicated to him.
