About this artwork
In my work, I explore strange, almost primitive creatures that represent power, instinct, and the urge to take.
These figures are not just animals, but reflections of human behavior — the way we claim, control, and sometimes take more than we give.
At the same time, I’m interested in how we, as viewers, interpret them. What feels threatening to one person may feel familiar to another.
Through simplicity and raw forms, I try to create space for reflection… on our own nature — the balance between taking, giving, and understanding ourselves.
Bart Hamelink, a self-taught Dutch artist, crafts stories using acrylics, ink, and markers. His style meshes raw, expressive lines with cartoonish figures, presenting bold colors in stark relief with striking textual elements. Throughout this playfully honest artistry, Hamelink explores the prismatic spectrum of human emotions, social struggles, and the beauty in vulnerability. His pieces, imbued with both humor and poignancy, coax viewers into experiencing resonance, reflection, and a distinctive edge of discomfort.
