About this artwork
A wave rider in action is an iconic image of summer fun. A surfer riding a wave on his board. He remains completely focussed and balanced, completely in a state of 'Flow' which allows him ro master nature's force. The surfer’s dynamic posture and the depiction of a wave in simplified forms create an atmosphere filled with energy. The composition of concentric forms create the illusion of a collapsing wave while at the same time focussing the observer's…
view on the wave rider. I use simplified forms but the contours of the surfer remain naturalistic. The use of clear shapes, vivid colours and repetitive elements creates a special rhythm. Colour patches and contrasts are used to create movement and depth. Despite the use of contrasts and fragments the final work is a harmonious painting re-creating a joyful, happy moment of summer fun. This is symbolic of our lives: it is you who creates harmony from the fragments and contrasts of life.
