About this artwork
A precious lace collar from the Baroque era - origin probably French.
Lace collars were beloved - and expensive - fashion items for both men and women.
This collar which is hand made from a large number of small thread bundles following an intricate pattern would have been worn over a very elaborate costume. The lace collars were mostly white (although we can also find yellow) - they were worn lightly starched and together with lace at the wrists… must have looked most impressive (although not very practical from our point of view).
The artwork has a small symbol on the front and a signature on the back - it is painted on the sides and needs no frame.
