About this artwork
Come Up Heather – from the “Oiseau” cycle
Borrowed from the French Surrealist Max Ernst, the bird appears here as a symbol of the Holy Spirit – the bearer of divine movement and creative power. The work takes up the biblical quote "Come up heather" (Revelation 4:1) – the moment when the curtain rises on the Apocalypse and the Church is raptured into the presence of God. The Holy Spirit, once the origin of the Church at Pentecost, now leads it back… to the throne of God. In the background, the globe implodes – a symbol of a creation that, without Spirit and Bride, is heading towards its end. Come Up Heather unites Surrealism and Eschatology into a visionary allegory of beginning and completion.
You will receive 1 of 6 hand-painted replicas from the Chagall edition. (The original is shown in the advertisement – the original is not for sale). Delivery time is approximately 6–8 weeks after ordering.
Bernhard Maria Moehnle is a German-born and trained painter who, after his experience in stage design and animation, devoted himself entirely to painting ("solapintura"). He develops a unique visual language for each series of paintings, combining classical modernism with artists such as Rembrandt, Chagall, and Max Ernst, thus creating a distinctive neo-Renaissance style. His works convey profoundly emotional messages of Christianity and touch the viewer with their symbolic clarity, spiritual depth, and expressive power.
