About this artwork
The Guard – from the “Oiseau” cycle
The Oiseau cycle portrays two birds in heraldic profile – symbols of the Spirit of God and the spirit of this world. In The Guard, the Spirit of God appears as a mighty guardian: its outstretched wing spans two millennia, holding back the darkness with all its terrors. Hence the subtitle, The Restrainer. The large dial without hands represents an invisible, long period – an era of grace. With its beak, the bird… points to a hidden moment, the hour of which no one knows. It heralds the instant when the Holy Spirit, having come, departs from the world – the end of the age of grace, the completion of His work.
You will receive 1 of 6 hand-painted replicas from the Chagall edition. (The original is shown in the advertisement – the original is not for sale). Delivery time is approximately 6–8 weeks after ordering.
Bernhard Maria Moehnle is a German-born and trained painter who, after his experience in stage design and animation, devoted himself entirely to painting ("solapintura"). He develops a unique visual language for each series of paintings, combining classical modernism with artists such as Rembrandt, Chagall, and Max Ernst, thus creating a distinctive neo-Renaissance style. His works convey profoundly emotional messages of Christianity and touch the viewer with their symbolic clarity, spiritual depth, and expressive power.
