About this artwork
Not long ago I had a talk with an art critic and agent. The question was if he could work with me. It was a nice encounter even if he told me he could not work with me. He saw the craftsmanship but he was confused.
I told him I don't want to be put in a box. Throughout the years I have liberated myself from expressing my works in just one way. Today all is possible, so why limit myself?
The only rule is to be as honest as possible. The 'style'… has to help the message come over loud and clear. No matter if it falls outside my usual way if working. Even better!
Tis painting is called 'LAUGHTER', I wanted to be exuberant, make something that is a party. Laughing a crazy laugh that celebrates life.

« What makes my paintings typically mine is for others to decide. I just try to make beautiful paintings, whatever that may stand for... »
Bert Van Zelm is a talented Dutch artist who has participated in exhibitions and residencies in Italy, the Netherlands, US and UK. Interested in studying the idea of how paintings lack space and time, he concentrates on pushing colour and clarity to the limit, creating mystery and satisfying his own fixation for shining elements. Van Zelm seeks foremost to surprise himself with what he makes; to surprise others - in his own words - would merely make him a clown.
