About this artwork
This work is a monotype in gouache on paper. I begin by creating a montage of black and white images (in this case, faces), placing a glass plate on top, and painting over it with gouache. Once the gouache on glass is finished, I re-moisten it with a spray bottle. After it has absorbed the moisture, I take a sheet of paper and wet it completely. When the moisture level seems sufficient, I place this damp sheet on the gouache and press it with a roller.… It is a unique print, and when the sheet is lifted, a reversed impression appears. The pigment has been deposited unevenly on the paper, and the result gives the impression that the image appears on the white paper. The vibrancy of the paint is unusual because the white of the paper is slightly visible beneath the paint. These faces seem to appear or disappear with the variations in color. This undefined aspect allows the viewer to imagine the forms.
Blandine Lemoine, a master of drawing, painting, and digital arts, has a strong inclination toward iconography. Her style, greatly influenced by photomontage and the assembly of heterogeneous images, is a clever blend of techniques such as transfer and monotype, creating a play of surrealist figures and elusive proportions. Through her dreamlike work, Blandine envelops the viewer in varied emotions, guiding them in an abstract dance between the appearance and disappearance of images, inviting them on an introspective journey to the heart of her imagination.
