About this artwork
This work ponders the question of who actually owns queer culture & wonder if some things should simply remain underground, away from the prying eyes of the unworthy. The premise here is quite simple – appropriate a graphic narrative by Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991) aka Tom of Finland and pixelate the twenty 35.6x27.9 cm images that make up the narrative so heavily that they are beyond easy readability (unless from a very great distance), thus denying…
the casual viewer access to something they are perhaps not welcome to look at. It’s elitist, I know. While the movements for gay emancipation took many forms after the first iteration in the late 19th century, I’ve concentrated on the period that affected my life directly. I’ve focused on six out of the twenty-six narratives created from 1968-1986 that, in their own way, chronicle the rise and fall of the gay liberation movement beginning in 1968, just before the action began, & ending in 1977 before everything went to hell in 1980 . . .

Bruce Eves was the recipient of the Governor-General’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Visual and Media Arts in 2018 and was the subject of Peter Dudar’s feature-length documentary “Bruce Eves in Polari” that premiered at The Power Plant. Eves was ranked 26th on the Alt-Power100 list compiled by ArtLyst (UK). In the past he was assistant-programming director at the Centre for Experimental Art and Communication (CEAC) in the late 1970s; and throughout the 1980s was the co-founder and chief archivist of the International Gay History Archive (now housed in the Rare Book and Manuscript division of the New York Public Library). Eves continues an active practice of exhibiting and curating on the cutting-edge, and in recent years has pushed the envelope further by expanding his work to include spoken-word projects performed monthly at the Black Eagle bar’s Dirty Queer Poetry Nights.
