About this artwork
Hope, rather than being a particular outcome, is, I believe, a kind of attitude of perception that keeps oneself from collapsing even within an uncertain reality. My work begins from this question. The beluga is a whale with a strong social nature, yet it is also a marine life form whose living environment is increasingly threatened by human intervention and ocean pollution. The smile of the beluga in my work is not a simple expression of optimism… or comfort, but symbolizes the attitude of a being trying to preserve itself even amid invisible pressures and relationships. Human beings, too, instinctively belong to certain groups and live while constantly striving to be recognized and to survive within them. Ironically, this aspect of human life seems to overlap with the life of the beluga, one of the most social whales. Byeol Muffin, a painter with a childhood connection to art, iconically uses thickly applied acrylic on Korean paper, sometimes torn for added texture. Her unique technique, Earth-inspired tones, and three-dimensional detailing bring to life her central muse, the endangered beluga. Muffin's works emote hopeful resilience, inspiring viewers to strive for harmony, environmental conservation, and peace even in adversity.
