The sculpture explores the fleeting moment of moving forward. With an impressive height of 94 cm and a minimal width, the figure appears as a gesture of determination frozen in wood.
Materiality: The exquisite cherry wood displays a particularly warm, reddish-brown hue. The grain runs in a harmonious line with the vertical orientation of the sculpture, visually reinforcing its upward striving.
Form and dynamics: The sculpture is divided into… three essential segments: two elongated "legs" suggesting a subtle scissor movement, and an upper element held together by a striking wooden ring. This ring acts as a visual hinge and center, focusing the dynamics of the vertical lines.
Effect in the room
The "Striding Man" is a classic example of Loth's ability to translate the monumental into the filigree.
CW Loth is a sculptor from Westphalia who completed his artistic training at the Ottersberg University of Applied Sciences and has been working with wood for decades. His technique involves transforming massive blocks of wood into complex, dynamic sculptures using a chainsaw, essentially folding the inside out – everything is created from a single piece. His constructivist-concrete style and precise carving create imaginary movements in space. Loth's sculptures convey a quiet tension and lead the viewer to a profound experience of space, potential, and inner movement.
