About this artwork
Dedicated to all rescue dogs, once very useful to man. When the fire alarm sounded, Dalmatians would run out of the firehouse, barking to let the bystanders know that they should get out of the way, because the fire truck would soon be speeding away. Once the truck was out on the street, Dalmatians would run alongside it.
Brave and faithful dogs, they were also very useful when the wagon approached a fire. Horses are afraid of fire, and… the presence of the Dalmatian distracted and comforted them.
Dalmatians also stood guard near the wagon, to make sure no one stole the firefighters' property, equipment or horses. Even today, some fire stations, in order to preserve the tradition, have Dalmatians, who continue to guard the firefighters' possessions, but instead of running next to the trucks, they keep the team company.
