About this artwork
This woodblock print was the first print in the series "Invoking Melpomene". This is the only Artist's proof of Melpomene. All of the work for this print was done at the Skopelos Foundation for Art, Skopelos, Greece.

Carolee Jakes is an American artist who has exhibited her works nationally and in Greece. In the space that exists between representation and abstraction, she combines screen and woodblock printing, as well as painting techniques to further explore that visual continuum. The key elements in Jakes' compositions include movement, patterns, and shifting colors. She begins her painting process by oil washing, to "set up the color", adding more intense paints as she continues.
