A small book caught my eye as I was walking through my neighbor's storage room. It was a storage room that encompassed the world. On shelves, in boxes, on the floor, everywhere were piles of things that had been important at some point. In between, on a narrow table, lay this small book, 7 x 17 centimeters in size, charred, bent, battered. "What is that?" I asked my neighbor. "From a house clearance," he answered curtly. I saw the fire in which this… small book lay before it was rescued. I took it in my hand, charred scraps of paper came loose. I packed it up even more carefully and took it with me. My neighbor didn't mind. The pages stuck together. I carefully removed them. A hidden world revealed its secrets. The women in my BLICKFANG pictures talk about it, each one revealing a different secret. The small book is a household liturgy from the 18th century.
My career as a painter began with my first pocket money, when I bought myself some wax crayons. I enthusiastically painted 'scratch pictures,' but over the years, the beginning of a potential career in painting was pushed aside by writing. In my hometown of Stuttgart, I trained as an editor at a daily newspaper, studied economics, and my heart belonged to journalism. With my three children, I discovered children's literature. I wrote children's radio plays for broadcasters and children's books for the Ravensburg publishing house. Others drew the wonderful illustrations. As a filmmaker, I accompanied the cameramen with language and content. Painting remained present in the background. In my current home of Berlin, my apartment has been transformed into a studio with a sawmill and lumberyard. I love it.
