About this artwork
This tree holds stories. As I painted it, I felt the weight of time in its roots, the quiet knowing of an old being that has watched generations come and go. Each line in the bark is a memory etched in stillness. Each swirl in the canopy holds echoes of laughter, grief, love, and change.
To me, this tree is more than a form, it’s a vessel of emotion, collecting what others leave behind. It doesn’t resist the flow of life, it absorbs it, stores it,… and offers it forward to the ones still growing.
This is the wisdom I aspire to: not to hold tightly, but to embrace deeply, and to pass on warmth, resilience, and presence through what I leave behind.

A new chapter : From Crystal to Christel
For eight years in southern India, heat, colour and spirituality seeped into every mark I burned into wood. It was there I found my artistic voice, and became known as Crystal.
Returning to Europe, settling in the ancient Alentejo of Portugal, I return also to my birth name: Christel Michielsen.
The name has changed. The vision has not.
Where India gave me fire and spiritual intensity, the Alentejo, with its megalithic monuments, cork oaks and vast silent skies, speaks a different but equally profound mystical language. Both worlds now live within my paintings, pyrography on birch plywood, layered with acrylics, ink and bister, weaving symbolic narratives through the organic language of wood.
An invitation to journey beyond the ordinary into the sacred.
