About this artwork
This painting is inspired by Jocelyne Saucier's award-winning novel "Il pleuvait des oiseaux" (It was raining birds) inhabited by the historical drama of the great Matheson fires at the beginning of the 20th century in the north of the Canadian province of Ontario. It is a visual interpretation of the author's text: "Fire has caprices that cannot be explained. It goes to the highest peaks, tears the blue from the sky, spreads in redness, in swelling,… in whistling, almighty god, it leaps on everything that is alive, jumps from one bank to the other, sinks into waterlogged ravines, devours peat bogs..."
Christine Viens, practicing law before dedicating herself entirely to art, mainly uses oil. Inspired by the Baroque and Romantic eras, she harmoniously manipulates bright colors, asymmetries and curves to evoke emotion and movement. Her works explore the expressive depth of human and animal bodies, revealing our vulnerability and resistance.
