"The clouds have rocks in them today," I said as the storm cleared. I call this picture "Yosemite Sapling" because the young tree in the foreground incorporates the best aspects of my photomontage style. It allows me to play with depth of field and perspective. As the clouds blew out of the Valley I felt that I was also able to capture another aspect of the scene. Time. Assembling this picture from hundreds of shots was a painstaking process.…
Sometimes I compare what I do to quilting or building a ship in a bottle. The photography is just the start - just the raw material for the photomontage that comes later. Each work that I do is an individual creative statement, much like a painting. Sometimes I can spend an hour just selecting the right photo or getting it to fit just right. It is slow, methodical work for which few people have the patience or time.. David Hockney may have popularized this style of photomontage. (See his famous work Pearblossom Highway.)
