About this artwork
For this painting "Modern Jazz 2", I explore the theme of movement and dance on the edge of abstraction. The bodies in motion can still be guessed. The choreography is reminiscent of Modern Jazz, which I practiced as an amateur for a long time.
For the composition, I am inspired by the work of Eadweard Muybridge, a photographer who at the end of the 19th century studied for the first time the decomposition of the movements of daily life.
I apply… sand to the canvas, then I color it with acrylic paint. Then I paint with a knife using oil paint for a very material rendering.

Corinne Malfreyt is an award-winning French artist who has exhibited her works nationally, as well as in China, Kuwait, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The major theme in her paintings is dance, as a symbol of movement. Another phase of Malfreyt's compositions relates to movement that is frozen in memories, reminiscences, and retinal persistence. In her creative process, she allows herself to be guided by varying thicknesses of sand, finishing with oils and emphasizing the rhythms of intervals between characters.
