About this artwork
This work is a fundamental act of rebellion against the "Prison of Language," a concept where established linguistic frameworks restrain and warp human understanding of the ever-changing real world. Fueled by a profound distrust of language itself, the artist initiates a destructive and regenerative process targeting the 'fake news' propagated by mainstream media.
Newspapers, symbolic of society's flawed narrative, are meticulously torn, soaked,… pulverized into pulp, and aggressively re-integrated onto the canvas. This intensive manual labor serves to physically break up the authority of erroneous language and transmute it into a new, textured surface.
The resulting surface visually expresses the confinement caused by self-serving truths. By seeking only comfortable information, humanity loses the ability to think critically and grasp context. Fate demands a recognition that our fixation within the limitations of language prevents us from perceiving genuine reality.
« I am a Korean artist who loves solitude, silence, and contemplation. I do not believe in philosophical realism. I believe that the world lasts only in permanent change. »
Daesun Choi is an artist based in South Korea whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally, as well as in Japan, the United States, and Germany. His most recent abstract and semi-abstract compositions are made using newspapers, hanji, or paper strings. For Choi, the newspaper represents the secular world in which we live. However, he does not believe that this medium gives an accurate interpretation because of the inherent limitations of text language, whose meaning can be easily distorted.
