About this artwork
Driving along a stretch of a nondescript road well off the commercial thoroughfares on the outskirts of Dallas, I stopped to get a closer look. I found myself in the presence of an older, venerable photographer. The scene was something I might more readily imagine at the state fair or a carnival. Instead, he relied on a passerby to stop, mount his saddled, faux longhorn steer and use his homemade, box camera to create a portrait on this hot, Texas…
summer day. His attitude was nonchalant. His approach was carefree. His ambition was modest. We bonded and acknowledged our mutual struggle to make a living as photographers.
