About this artwork
Abacus incorporates vintage shoe stretchers, wooden spoons, picture frames, clock parts and some bill fish vertebrae that I found many years ago on an island off of Baja, thinking that maybe I could use them someday in my art.
I like to include in my sculptures things that I find on the street. In Abacus, these include the pipe on the upper left (into which I glued a bunch of pipe cleaners), and the nail on the upper right, which I found with the… pink strands attached.

Dave Kwinter, originally a painter, now crafts evocative assemblage sculptures using primarily wood and metal, shifting to this medium in 2018. His technique weds careful collection of materials with a trial-and-error process, creating surreal, unrecognizable forms that speak of creativity and curiosity. Each masterful sculpture deepens the sense of mystery, inviting viewers to become enthralled by the intrigue and engaging unpredictability his work exudes.
