About this artwork
I find something particularly atmospheric about beech woodland. The fallen leaves are somehow toxic to undergrowth, and the grey pillars of the trunks stand in uncluttered architecture above them. Here I found a view looking downwards , a slight frost muting the colours and the mesh of branch and twig cast in lemon sunlight and violet shadow. Through the trees, I could just make out the carcass of an old van, preserved for some obscure purpose of…
storage, evoking the perilous forest refuge of fairytale. The somewhat pessimistic title, gleaned from my old biochemistry textbook, connects the scene to my obsession with layered time, and the passage of seasons and lives.
