About this artwork
This is the great white whale of American writer Hernan Melville's famous novel "Moby Dick". In this semi-abstract the whale has been harpooned and is thrashing violently in the open ocean. The harpoon line can be seen on the right with red segments denoting the blood from the wound.
The original drawing was created with pen on paper. The drawing act in these abstracts comes with little forethought or planning. Only after the autonomic action… has been completed (about 3-4 seconds) does the brain begin to see objects in the design. Next, several copies of the sketch are produced on a laser printer and are then colored using colored pencils. The transfer of the original design to canvas is accomplished using a computer projector, projecting the original drawing onto the blank canvas where it can be redrawn at the proper size to fit the dimensions of the canvas and then painted.
Painted on gallery wrapped canvas, the work requires no further framing and can be hung as is.
