About this artwork
The body is the cathedral of the soul. This work is overpowering in its apparent link to death, but it also speaks to the expansion of the soul at death to become one with spacetime itself. This is accomplished by aligning the rib cage of a fallen human with the ribs of the Romanesque cathedral (Alcobaca in Portugal) with sunlight pouring in through the choir's clear windows. Close examination will find a dragonfly perched on the pelvic bone considering…
three mosquitoes on the rib cage. This piece is also about that precarious moment in time. It is the architecture of our universe.
The use of the cathedral may call out notes of Christianity, but as my father and grandfather were both architects, and infused me with the love of structures in space, this should not be interpreted as a specific religion's statement. Rather, it is a statement about the feeling one experiences in any compassionate religious grand edifice and how its spacetime relates to that experience.

David Martsolf is an award-winning American artist whose paintings have been featured in solo exhibitions nationally.
