About this artwork
The Canadian province of Nova Scotia is situated by the Atlantic Ocean and is known for its seafaring culture. Peggy's Cove is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay in Nova Scotia‘s Halifax Regional Municipality, which is famous for the Peggy's Point Lighthouse (established 1868). Nova Scotia is home to over 160 historic lighthouses, but no beacon is as photographed as the one in the vibrant fishing village… of Peggy’s Cove. Built in 1915, Peggy’s Point Lighthouse still keeps watch over surging ocean waves and working lobster boats.
Legend has it that when a schooner was shipwrecked in the area in the 1800’s, there was a sole survivor; a woman named Margaret. Some say, she married a local man, settled in the village and thus became renowned as “Peggy of the Cove”. Others say that the name comes from the site’s location at the entrance to St. Margaret’s Bay (Peggy is a common nickname for Margaret).
« Expressing my love of colour and design, my paintings convey a sense of spirituality. The concept of ‘flourishing’ is a prominent theme in my work. »
David Tomlin is an exciting Canadian painter who has exhibited his work nationally, including in the US, Canada and France. Self-taught and creating from a signature Canadian perspective, he composes surreal, vibrant paintings that exalt natural light and colour. He is influenced by Impressionism, and more profoundly by Canadian First Nations artists in their representations of humanity's relationship to the natural world. Tomlin's semi-abstract style showcases purpose, intensity and an energizing visual flourish. Together with a love of colour and a passion for design, Tomlin's paintings evoke a sense of contemplative spirituality expressing his understanding of the three ‘transcendentals’- BEAUTY, GOODNESS, and TRUTH.
